This private Appian Way golf cart tour with catacombs access allows you to see Rome’s most famous road, along with some iconic sites of Ancient Rome, as well as places connected with the life of the early Christian communities.
Our private tour of the Appian Way in golf cart starts at 9:50 in front of the Basilica San Clemente, where you will meet your expert guide. They will be leading you through the Basilica’s underground passages, that offer the unique opportunity of exploring different levels of Rome‘s past: beneath the basilica, there’s a 4th century church containing some of the world’s finest medieval frescoes and the relics of Saint Clemens, third Christian Pope, who died as a martyr around 100 A.D. Further below, a room belonging to a mithraeum (the cult of Mithra was widespread in 2nd century A.D.) and finally the remains of a Roman house dating back to 1st century A.D.
This Appian Way golf cart tour will take you to the Baths of Caracalla, the second largest bathhouse of Ancient Rome, and by far the best preserved. It dates back to the 3rd Century A.D., and it was realised during the reign of the emperor Caracalla (hence the name). You will be able to walk among the massive ruins of the complex, that featured 4 different pools and number of gyms, locker rooms, and other areas, learn about social life in Ancient Rome, and see some of the artworks and mosaics that decorated the place.
The next highlight of this private tour of the Appian Way in golf cart is certainly Saint Sebastian’s gate (originally called Appian Gate), the largest and best preserved of all gates through the defensive wall. Here, you can enter the museum, visit the first and second floors of the watch tower, and even walk on the ramparts, a small stretch of the almost 19 kilometres of wall that surrounded the city in ancient times.
The gate is the beginning of the Appian Way, the most important of ancient Roman roads, built over 2300 years ago and extremely well preserved, the Appia Antica, Regina Viarum (the queen of the roads). It was a key connection between Rome and southern Italy, where the commercial routes to Greece and Middle East departed from. The key stops of this golf cart tour on the Appian Way are the Circus of Maxentius and the Tomb of Cecilia Metella, both with entry included.
The next stop of our Appian Way golf cart tour is the catacombs San Sebastiano (Saint Sebastian), where you can discover the life of the early Christian communities. Already used as a pagan burial site, the Catacombs of St Sebastian were transformed into a Christian necropolis towards the end of the 2nd Century, dedicated to St Peter and St Paul. Your guide will drop you off at the entrance and you’ll visit the site on a tour (about 30 minutes, not private but small group) led by a guide provided by the catacombs.
On the way back to the center, this tour in Golf cart of the Appian Way will take you to the church Domine quo vadis, built on the spot where, according to the legend, St Peter, who was fleeing Rome to avoid crucifixion, met Jesus and asked him ‘Lord, where are you going?’ (hence the name of the church). A rock is kept in the church that allegedly bears the footprints of Jesus.
