This private waking tour starts at the entrance of the Baths of Caracalla, the second largest bathhouse of Ancient Rome, and by fare the pest preserved. It dates back to the III Century A.D., and it was realised during the reign of the emperor Caracalla (hence the name). Some of the rooms are frescoed with paintings dating between the 3rd century AD and the Middle Ages. A hidden gem very few people know about, that will make you travel to the time of the Roman Empire.
Then, it’s time to make our way along the Villa Celimontana and through the Arch of Dolabella, to reach the Basilica of San Clemente. The Basilica offers the unique opportunity of experiencing different levels of Rome’s past. Below the church, finished in the Middle Ages, you’ll find another IV Century church containing some of the world’s finest medieval frescos. Going further below, there’s a Mithraic temple dating back to the II Century A.D., part of an older edifice that was built in the I Century A.D.
The visit to the excavations od Basilica lasts 30 minutes, after which the tour ends.
